The Cata RiverABOVE: " ...but all they saw was potential, the possibilities of their new house overlooking the Cata River and the green fields of the farm in high summer." The Cata river area in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where Thobela grew up - and where he bought a farm. This is the countryside where he took his adopted son, Pakamile, to set up a new home.

Where Benny Griessel livesABOVE: The Gardens suburb of Cape Town dates back some 100 years. This is Upper Orange Road today, a street Benny would use every day to drive towards the city, and then on to work. Downtown Cape Town is straight ahead.

The real Devil's PeakABOVE: Devil’s Peak, as seen from Table Mountain. The peak has the myth of Van Hunks, a retired pirate who smoked an evil-smelling pipe. Van Hunks was last seen challenging a stranger to a smoking competition on the mountainside. They puffed until the mountain was covered in a dense cloud – the origin of the tablecloth – but Van Hunks was never seen again. The stranger turned out to be the Devil, and he and Van Hunks are still puffing away.

Cape InfantaABOVE: The Breede River runs into the sea at Cape Infanta (where the climax of Devil's Peak takes place). The photographer is standing on the western bank, on the Infanta side. Witsand can bee seen on the eastern bank, across the river.
